Landon, Letitia Elizabeth

Landon, Letitia Elizabeth
(1802-1838)
She was born in Chelsea at a time when her father - a partner in a firm supplying the British army-made money. After the war the family lived in "reduced circumstances." In June 1838 she married George MacLean, governor of Cape Coast Castle, West Africa. In October she was found dead, clutching a bottle of prussic acid, a medication she had been taking to treat fits. She published four novels and several plays, and also wrote of passionate love at a time when convention restricted what women could and could not write. Some of her poetry publications (written under the initials L.E.L.): Rome, 1820. The Fate of Adelaide, 1821. The Improvisatrice, 1824 (6th edition, 1825). The Troubadour, 1825. The Golden Violet, 1827. The Venetian Bracelet, 1829. Some of her poems: "A Legend of Tintagel Castle," "Age and Youth," "Cafés in Damascus," "Love, Hope, and Beauty," "Poetical Portraits," "Sir Walter Scott," "St. George's Hospital, Hyde-Park Corner," "Subjects for Pictures," "The African Prince," "The Covenanters," "The Female Convict," "What is Success?"
